Residents of Pingtung appeared to welcome their army’s latest live-fire drills on Thursday, following Beijing’s own military exercises around Taiwan.

"I think China keeps threatening Taiwan. But I think threat makes us more united, we will never surrender," said Ding, one local. "We still need to let [China] know we can still hurt you if there is anything bad [that] happens."

Taiwan also conducted drills on Tuesday, deploying hundreds of troops. They came after Beijing carried out its own military exercises around the island, which ended on Wednesday.

The actions followed US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taipei, which China warned would come with severe consequences.

Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory under the 'One China' policy, while the island has never officially declared independence.
