Archive footage filmed on April 14, 1961, features Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin arriving in Moscow two days after his historic flight to space.
Gagarin can be seen leaving an aircraft at Vnukovo airport and meeting Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev.
"I am glad to report to you that the task of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and the Soviet Government has been fulfilled. The world's first space flight was made on the Soviet spacecraft Vostok on April 12, 1961," Gagarin said.
Thousands of Muscovites crowded the streets to greet the first human in space, with many seen waving at Gagarin from roofs and windows. He was travelling in an open car with his wife Valentina, and Khrushchev.
Gagarin’s Vostok 1 launched at 6:07 am UTC from Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan on April 12. He spent 89 minutes orbiting Earth before landing at around 8:05 UTC, ejecting from the craft via parachute. The landing point was 26 km southwest of the town of Engels in the Saratov region.
