A rally against electricity price hikes was held outside the National Energy Regulatory Agency (ANRE) in Chisinau on Wednesday.

The footage shows the protesters chanting slogans including "We are the people!", "Down with (President) Maia Sandu!" and "Early elections!". Some were seen with placards reading 'Poverty, inflation, price rises = PAS [Action and Solidarity Party] rule', 'Go away, you no longer represent us!' and 'Stop the price increase, down with ANRE [National Energy Regulatory Agency]!'

Also at the rally were Communist Party Deputy Diana Karaman, Shor Party parliamentary group Councillor Yuri Kuznetsov, along with other activists.

Karaman said that citizens were opposed to an increase in the tariff.

"We, as representatives of the opposition, as representatives of civil society and as citizens of the Republic of Moldova, are categorically against this, because any government must work first and foremost for the benefit of the people. But for the last year, more than a year, we have seen the reverse process, and we find this unacceptable. We will continue to fight," she stated.

Representatives of the Shor Party said on Wednesday that the rally in Chisinau took place following an ANRE meeting, which approved an increase in electricity tariffs by more than one leu at the request of electricity market operators.

It marks the second price increase in a month. On November 4, for Premier Energy customers there was an increase from 3.15 leu to 4.77 leu per kWh and for FEE Nord customers from 3.21 leu to 4.81 leu per kWh.

The rally was accompanied by representatives of law-enforcement agencies. No official information about any detentions has been reported.

In September, President Sandu called on the agencies to "promptly identify the sources of illegal financing of those who pay for participation in protests and severely punish any attempts at aggression, provocation or destabilisation".

The following month, she asked the Cabinet of Ministers to expand the powers of the police, so that security forces could disperse protests without the consent of the local authorities.

According to media reports, rallies which close roads or restrict access to public buildings are now banned on weekdays, while weekend protests are limited to four hours.

On October 14, Chairman of the Shor party, Valeriy Klimenko, said that he considered the decision by the Emergency Situations Commission (ESC) to ban protests blocking traffic to be illegal and "a gross violation of the Constitution of the Republic of Moldova".

Mass anti-government rallies began in the country in May over soaring energy and food prices, as well as falling living standards and record inflation.
