After the US men's basketball team beat France to win a fourth consecutive Olympic gold, player Kevin Durant and coach Gregg Popovich spoke to the press in Saitama on Saturday.

"We went through a lot of adversity, we came together pretty fast. We got a bond with each other that will last a lifetime in our team. This group was special and I am grateful to be a part of it, that we can bring the gold back home," said Durant.

Popovich praised Durant, saying "KD is not special because he's so talented, the way he works on his game is more impressive, the relationships he builds with team mates, the respect he garners."

Durant led the US with 29 points, including two key free throws in the decisive moment with 8.8 seconds left that secured the win and prevented a comeback attempt by their opponents. In the press statement, he highlighted the importance of each individual in the team. The final score was 87-82, the smallest margin of victory in a women's or men's final since 1972.

"I am just grateful that we all committed to this early and we stuck to it and finished that off," said Durant.

Team mate Draymond Green highlighted that it was "one of the craziest times of this world" with the pandemic and the postponement of the Games, adding that the victory was 'special'

"It ranks right up there at the top for me," said Green.

On the morning of the Olympic final, Kevin Durant's manager announced that he will sign a contract extension with the NBA's Brooklyn Nets with a duration of four years and a salary of $198 million (€168 million).
