Protesters opposing Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan gathered at Yerevan’s Freedom Square on Thursday.

Thousands took part in the action that came after a group of army officers demanded Pashinyan’s resignation.

The prime minister earlier today denounced the army statement as an “attempted military coup”. He also asked his supporters to gather for a a rally in central Yerevan and was later seen marching together with the people.

The prime minister has faced calls to resign after he signed the Russian-brokered deal to end fighting between Azerbaijan and ethnic Armenian forces in the disputed region of Nagorno-Karabakh in November last year.

Under the terms of the trilateral agreement, a number of Nagorno-Karabakh districts came under Azerbaijani control.
