Germany: Merkel forever for jubilant CDU supporters

German Chancellor Angela Merkel returned to the headquarters of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) party in Berlin after she had discussed the provisional federal election result on German television with the leaders of the five largest parties on Sunday.

At the victory celebration at Konrad Adenauer Haus, Merkel was welcomed by people chanting and applauding. In a short speech Merkel said that "today is to party". She then announced "tomorrow we work again", on which the room started booing. She backtracked immediately, saying the party faithful could start work again "the day after tomorrow", causing the room to erupt into a chorus of cheers.

Merkel's CDU has received 42 percent of the vote, according to exit polls, and have therefore likely won the German federal elections. However, the polls put the CDU short of an overall majority of seats in the Bundestag, suggesting that another coalition agreement may be required. Current coalition partners the FDP looked unlikely to retain their seats in parliament.
