Republican party senators managed to block the bill aimed at creating a Capitol riot commission to investigate the actions of January 6th during a senate vote in Washington DC on Friday.
The key procedural vote to create an independent and bipartisan commission to investigate the US Capitol riot failed after falling short of the 60 votes needed to advance. The final vote count was 54 to 35, with only six Republicans voting on the side of the Democrats on the bill that had already passed in the house. At least 10 Republican senators were needed.
"The Republican minority just mounted a partisan filibuster against an independent commission to report on January 6th. Both efforts should have moved forward in a solidly bipartisan way. But, out of fear or fealty to Donald Trump, the Republican minority just prevented the American people from getting the full truth about January 6th. The Republican minority just prevented the Senate from even debating the bill. No opportunity for amendments, no opportunity for debate," said Democratic Senator Chuck Schumer.
The infamous U.S. Capitol riot, led by Trump supporters, resulted in five deaths. Rioters stormed the Capitol building, attacking police officers while threatening the lives of numerous politicians.
The riot took place while Congress was attempting to count the Electoral College votes to confirm the result of the 2020 presidential election.
