European Parliament voted overwhelmingly to condemn the arrest of Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny in Brussels on Thursday.
The approved resolution calls for sanctions against officials involved in the decision to jail him as well as the inner circle of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
The document also calls for an immediate stop to works on the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline between Russia and Germany.
On Sunday, Navalny returned to Russia after recovering in Germany from alleged poisoning with Novichok nerve agent in August. Navalny was detained upon arrival at the Sheremetyevo airport and imprisoned for 30 days.
MEPs appealed to the Russian authorities to promptly release Navalny, indicating that his arrest and the way it occurred clearly contradict international laws and the Russian constitution.
