Merkel said that while people cannot ignore serious news such as "war and terror," she is fully supportive of the carnival clubs' decision to celebrate carnival season after last year's cancellation of the carnival parade in Braunschweig due to terror alerts. "Your motto this year is 'Now more than ever,' and I think that is wonderful," she said.
Merkel was handed gifts by the participating carnival clubs, and was also given a carnival medal by each club. The 5th Carnival season began on 11.11.2015 at 11:11am (local time), and it is expected to traditionally reach its culmination in the period between February 4 - February 9, with thousands of costumed performers expected on the streets of Cologne to celebrate.
