Thousands of climate activists from around Germany gathered in Luetzerath on Sunday calling for the village to be rescued from eviction due to coal mining industry expansion.

Demonstrators protested against RWE (Rhineland-Westfalia Energie company) plans to tear down the village and cut down trees to widen their open pit mine.

After a joint demo of Ende Galende climate group with Fridays for Future, Greenpeace and others, hundreds of Ende Galende activists managed to get on RWE premises near open an pit mine and thus temporary stop its work.

“Every meter of opencast mining is too much and in the end people suffer,” said Dina, one of the activists.

She went on saying, “While we are blocking the Garzweiler open mine here, in Glasgow starts COP 26, that means that there has been debate for 30 years without real action.”

After the activists stayed near the mine for several hours they peacefully left the premises guarded by the police.
