Locals' opinions were split in Washington D.C., Thursday, when asked about their accounts of what had taken place during the Capital Hill riot last year.

Speaking during an interview at Capitol Hill on the anniversary of the incident, Elizabeth Nelson, a D.C. local stated "I'd like to think that we're much better prepared to deal with it this time, which would be off-putting for everybody who would like to do this kind of thing." She continued to say there was no doubt the event had really happened, stating "We know that it wasn't a hoax. And if people are saying that it didn't really happen or that they were just a bunch of slightly lively tourists or overenthusiastic people exercising their right of free speech. But I live here and I saw it and I know that it was a scandal."

L.A. Warren, who alleged he was present on the day offered a different view on the event, saying "It was one of the happiest time of my life, there were so many good people here that day. I've never experienced such love." He went on to draw attention to those who have been arrested over the incident. "Police, if they catch you doing something and it's wrong and they want to hold you. They hold you 72 hours and charge you. It's been a lot longer than 72 hours. It's been a year some of these people been in jail for this so-called insurrection," Warren concluded.

Scenes of utter destruction and chaos emerged from the US Washington DC Capitol after supporters of US President Donald Trump descended on Congress following a 'Save America' march on January 06 last year. The protest took place on the same day the US Congress was formally certifying the electoral college votes, confirming Joe Biden as the next President of the United States.

Supporters stormed the Capitol, clashing violently with law enforcement before the national guard was mobilised. Five people, including a Capitol police officer, died during the storming.
