A march called by Venezuelan opposition leader Juan Guaido ended with a series of clashes between his supporters and riot police in Caracas on Tuesday.

Footage shows Guaido among his supporters as they try to address the National Assembly, but are blocked by riot police deploying water cannon and tear gas.

"It is time to take the side of the people, it is time to take a step, you have the opportunity, we are many more, it is the majority of the people, you want change, you are desperate, you have told me, your superiors have told me," Guaido said to police. However, his appeals were not successful, and he had to seek shelter alongside his supporters.

The opposition leader called for Tuesday's protest in February, with supporters of the Venezuelan government also scheduling a demonstration with the National Assembly as the destination.
