United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres "strongly hopes that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) can be preserved" following Iran's announcement that it would not comply with parts of it, deputy spokesperson for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq said during a press conference in New York City on Wednesday.
"The Secretary-General has consistently reiterated that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action represents a major achievement in nuclear-non-proliferation and diplomacy and has contributed to regional and international peace and Security. He strongly hopes that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action can be preserved," Haq said.
The JCPOA, the so-called Iran nuclear deal, was agreed upon by Iran and the P5+1 (China, France, Germany, Russia, the UK, and the US) and backed by the UN Security Council in July 2015.
On 8 May 2018, the United States officially pulled out of the agreement.
On Wednesday morning Iranian President Hassan Rouhani announced a partial withdrawal from the JCPOA nuclear deal in his TV statement from Tehran. The Iranian leader set a 60-day deadline for the remaining deal signatories to come up with new terms to salvage the deal.
