More than 100 flooded rural settlements and several districts of Kurgan in Russia's Southern Urals were seen in drone footage released by the region's governor Vadim Shumkov on Wednesday.
"The water level in the Ketovsky district has passed the 11-metre mark, and in the city of Kurgan it exceeded the dangerous level by half a metre already, approaching the nine-metre mark. The water is rising very fast. <...> Our task is to protect the neighbourhoods of the left bank and the city centre by keeping the water out," added the head of the region.
In addition, Shumkov informed the residents of the settlements in the Ketovsky and Belozersky districts that they should evacuate, warning of the threat of flooding in these territories.
According to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations, on Wednesday, 669 residential buildings and 2,376 holiday homes, as well as five low bridges and nine road sections remained flooded in 25 local settlements.
The agency also reported that more than 13,700 people were evacuated, with 931 people have been admitted to emergency shelters, 200 of them children. More than 4,000 specialists and 1,500 vehicles were working in the region.
Thirty-nine regions of the Russian Federation have seen flooding in the past few weeks. A state of emergency has been declared in the Altai region in Siberia and Tyumen, Orenburg and Kurgan regions in the Southern Urals.
