Russian presidential spokesperson Dmitri Peskov reiterated that Moscow acted 'strictly in accordance with international law', after US Defence Department press secretary Patrick Ryder alleged that Russia had launched what he termed a 'counter space weapon'.

"I have no comment on this," he said at a briefing in Moscow on Wednesday. "We act strictly in accordance with international law, we do not violate anything. We have repeatedly advocated bans on the launch of any weapons into space. Unfortunately, our initiatives have been rejected, including by the United States."

He also called US Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s remarks that 'the Iranian people are probably better off' following the death of Iran’s president Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter crash a 'boorish statement.'

"To be honest, I haven't seen this statement in the original yet, but it's hard to believe. It is hard to believe that a diplomat, especially such a high-ranking representative of a country like the United States, could make such a diplomatically awkward statement, and in fact a boorish statement against an entire nation," Peskov said.

Pentagon spokesperson Patrick Ryder claimed at a briefing on Tuesday that Russia launched a 'counter space weapon' on May 16.

"Russia launched a satellite into low Earth orbit that we assess is likely a counter space weapon presumably capable of attacking other satellites in low Earth orbit. Russia deployed this new counter space weapon into the same orbit as a US government satellite," Ryder alleged.

A Russian-backed resolution on banning all weapons in space was rejected by the UN Security Council this week, after the US and others voted against. Previously Russia vetoed a US resolution on 'nuclear weapons or any other kinds of weapons of mass destruction', saying that draft didn't go far enough.

The Iranian president, his foreign minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others were confirmed dead by state media and officials after their helicopter came down in the mountains of northern Iran during heavy fog on Sunday.
