Muslims from St Petersburg and Simferopol gathered for traditional namaz to mark Eid al-Fitr.

Footage captured on Wednesday shows hundreds of people spreading carpets and praying on Kronverksky Prospekt in St Petersburg. Worshippers are also seen at the Cathedral Mosque in Simferopol, which held a festive namaz to mark the end of the month of Ramadan for the first time since it opened in 2023.

"For me, the festive namaz (prayers) in this mosque are a very big holiday, because we have been waiting for the opening of this mosque for about 10 years. Now the whole family of me, my father and my younger brother have all come together for the festive namaz," said local Jafer Memetov.

Eid al-Fitr falls on the first day of the tenth month of Shawwal in the Islamic lunar calendar, commencing with the rising of the crescent moon, and closes a month-long period of down-to-dusk fasting during Ramadan.
