A Chisinau court placed Vice-Chair of the Shor Party, Marina Tauber, under house arrest for 20 days on Tuesday.

Footage shows the politician from Moldova’s opposition movement being led into the courtroom for the verdict, as well as dozens of Shor supporters with anti-government placards protesting outside the courthouse and calling for her release.

"Again, they made sure that I was not involved in the elections in Gagauzia, did not take part in the protest on May 7, in the demonstration on May 21 and in general was politically inactive and could not speak the truth," the Shor Party’s press office quoted Tauber as saying.

The police reported no detentions during the protest.

According to the Moldovan anti-corruption prosecutor's office, Tauber was detained on Monday morning at Chisinau airport while trying to fly to Tel Aviv "because the accused had violated the conditions of the pre-trial restrictions imposed on her".

The politician herself said in an earlier video message that she 'needed medical attention' and was 'unaware' of the court hearing.

In July 2022, the Moldovan parliament took away Tauber’s parliamentary immunity and placed her under arrest amid allegations of illegal party funding.

Since then, the politician has had her sentence both commuted and tightened more than once, with the latter for allegedly violating the conditions of her arrest.

In February, she was released from judicial control (the equivalent of being under travel restrictions) and relieved of all restrictions after the Сourt Collegium for Criminal Cases of Chisinau Court of Appeal granted her lawyers' request.

On March 12, Tauber’s party called for the government to issue payments for gas, electricity and heating bills for residents, to cover the three winter months, within 24 hours. According to the party, the administration did not comply.

Parliament Speaker Igor Grosu claimed that the opposition was backed by Russia whose goal was to stop 'the European integration process' and to use Moldova 'in the war against Ukraine'.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said that statements about Moscow's involvement in the opposition protests in Chisinau 'were ridiculed in Moldova itself'.

"Nothing is more absurd than blaming Russia for what is happening there now. We see how the leadership of this country has taken a course against the people of their own state," Zakharova said.

Protests in Moldova have been taking place regularly since September 2022.
