04:58The halls of the Chinese Palace in Peterhof have been opened to visitors after 20 years of restoration.
Footage captured on Monday shows rooms of the palace, authentically decorated with paintings, panels, gilded clocks, vases and sculptures dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries.
Roman Kovrikov, the director of the Peterhof Museum-Reserve, said that the restorers managed to recover the appearance of the glass-threaded panel to the its initial image of the 18th century.
"The most striking thing is the glass panel. There is no such interior in the world, a glass-threaded panel in such a volume, made by Russian craftsmen in two years. In just two years the craftsmen - there were 10 people - embroidered a glass panel with millions of glass beads," stressed Kovrikov.
Kovrikov also noted that restorers managed to preserve the parquet in the halls of the Chinese Palace.
"A completely unique type-setting parquet of the XVIII century, which is typed in the marquetry style. Today you will see up to 20 types of wood, which we have also restored. The most interesting thing - I can probably say that it was a great discovery for me - when the restorers began to clear the gilding of the XIX century, the gilding of the XVIII century was found under it. So we decided to clear this gilding till the layer of the XVIII century," the director clarified.
Kovrikov also added that restoration specialists from all over the world are now eager to visit the halls of the Chinese Palace to learn from the experience of recreating a unique historical object of the XVIII century.
Russian Minister of Culture Olga Lyubimova announced on the official Telegram channel that all 17 interiors of the Chinese Palace have been restored.
"The luxurious interior decoration, created with exceptional craftsmanship, has no analogues in the world. The authenticity of the decoration of the Chinese Palace, preserved during the Great Patriotic War, makes it an outstanding monument of world importance," Lyubimova said.
The Chinese Palace was built by Italian architect Antonio Rinaldi in 1762-1768 and is part of the ‘Private Cottage’ palace and park complex. The end of the restoration was timed to coincide with the 295th anniversary of Catherine’s the Great birth.
