Victory Day parades to mark the 79th anniversary of the end of World War II took place across Russian cities, with events held in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Zaporozhye region on Thursday.

Footage captured in Yekaterinburg, Saint Petersburg and Chelyabinsk features thousands of military personnel and dozens of military vehicles taking part in military processions on the main squares. In the video from Zaporozhye’s Melitopol and DPR’s Donetsk, locals can be seen laying flowers to war memorials.

Victory Day parades are held annually across Russia on May 9, with the main celebration taking place in Moscow's Red Square. Many other countries hold similar events on the same day, with Western countries marking it a day earlier due to the time difference in the German surrender.

On September 30, 2022, President Vladimir Putin agreed to sign documents allowing the accession of the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR) and Zaporozhye, as well as the Lugansk People’s Republic (LPR), and Kherson, to the Russian Federation.

According to Moscow, it followed referenda in which people living in those areas exercised their right to self-determination and requested to join Russia.

Ukraine and its international allies condemned the move, calling it an annexation of Kiev’s sovereign territory.
