The moon, named after North American beavers, which build their winter dams at this time of year, is also known as the Frost Moon or Mourning Moon which also describes the approach of the cold season.
The phenomenon occurs when the Sun and the Moon are aligned on opposite sides of the Earth, with the full face of the Moon lit up by the Sun. This is the fourth and last Supermoon of the year, which appears bigger and brighter than usual.
