Description

Four Syrian nationals were reportedly killed and several Lebanese civilians injured in an alleged Israeli air strike on the town of Shamaa in the southern Lebanese district of Tyre on Thursday.

Footage shows the extent of the destruction following the airstrike, with plumes of smoke billowing from a burning car amid damaged houses. Lebanese soldiers and rescue teams can be seen at the scene, deploying and evacuating the area after searching for victims.

"It was unbelievable. I was standing about 50-60 metres away when the strike happened right in front of me," shared Cont Hajjo, a Journalist from Shamaa town. "A flash of light hit my face and the blast's pressure threw me back. Later I got up and saw that the air strike happened here. Four Syrians were martyred and four civilians were wounded, a man and his family".

The Lebanese Health Ministry claimed that four Syrian nationals were killed in the strike, which also wounded five Lebanese nationals. Among the injured was a 'woman who was hospitalised in stable condition, while another wounded was treated in the emergency room and released'.

At the time of publication, the Israeli military had yet to comment on reports of civilians being targeted in the town of Shamaa.

Hezbollah announced that its fighters had fired 'dozens of Katyusha rockets at the Matzuva settlement' in response to the attack on the southern Lebanese town.

The air strike follows escalating tensions between Hezbollah and the Israeli military, sparked by a rocket attack in Majdal Shams that killed 12 children. Israel blamed Hezbollah, which denied involvement. Israel then killed senior Hezbollah leader Fuad Shukr in a raid in the southern suburbs of Beirut that left seven people dead. Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah vowed to respond in kind.

Since 8 October, the day after the Israel-Hamas war began, Hezbollah, along with Lebanese and Palestinian factions, has been exchanging shells with the Israeli army along the border.

The Israel-Hamas war broke out after Hamas launched an attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200 and holding them captive in Gaza. In the enclave, the Israeli military conducted a large-scale campaign of air strikes and ground incursions, killing at least 39,324 Palestinians and injuring more than 90,830 at the time of publication.
