Description

New York City mayor Eric Adams, already indicted on fraud and bribery, might face additional charges and it is 'likely' that more defendants will be charged as part of the federal corruption scheme, stated the prosecutor following a hearing on Wednesday in Manhattan federal court.

Footage shows the mayor arriving with his entourage at the court, while reporters were seen filming and working outside the building. Several protesters were seen holding signs, shouting slogans denouncing Adams and calling for his resignation. Adams, as he left the court, was seen holding thumbs up before departing.

"There is no double standard in the Constitution for how you treat those arrested and indicted for crimes. He's been treated different, we want him removed! If we have to, if we have to, we will shut down this city!" said a protester.

According to reports, prosecutors might file new charges against Adams, while his lawyers had requested the court to dismiss his bribery charge due to the prosecution allegedly leaking details about the case to the public.

Local media reported that prosecutors would respond to Adams' lawyers' request by October 18, as proposed by the judged.

64 year-old Adams stands accused of illegal actions dating back to 2014, including allegedly accepting foreign donations which gave rise to illicit public contributions.

The indictment alleges that Adams received luxury hotel stays and travel benefits worth more than $100,000 from Turkish nationals, among them a government official according to media reports.

He is suspected of having, in return, put pressure on New York firefighters to give their approval to the inauguration of a new Turkish consulate despite security concerns.

The announcement of the indictment comes just days after the resignation of several close associates to the mayor including his health commissioner and the chancellor of education.

Prior to the indictment being made public, the elected representative of New York to the US House of Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez called on Eric Adams to resign 'for the good of the city'.

Adams said, however, that he would resume his activities as mayor pending further proceedings.
