Description

Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo organisation and several trade unions activists gathered in front of Buenos Aires's Plaza de Mayo on Thursday to protest against government plans to cut funding to human rights organisations.

The Grandmothers of the Plaza de Mayo accused Javier Milei's government of planning to dissolve the Special Investigation Unit (UEI), which is dedicated to identifying and locating missing and kidnapped grandchildren during the military dictatorship.

Footage shows protesters gathering in front of Plaza de Mayo holding organisation flags, chanting slogans, and displaying placards with messages such as 'Hunger is a crime', 'There is no memory', and 'There are 30000'.

"It is 90% of the search for grandchildren that the government of Javier Milei today is Defunding," said Victoria Montenegro protesting at the gathering "by closing the cases for crimes against humanity, eliminating the research areas regarding genocide files while closing and dismissing cites and places of memory" she continued.

"We will not be able to continue searching for the missing grandsons and granddaughters," added Victoria Donda, another protester at the event

Established in 2004, the unit is part of the National Commission for the Right to Identity (CONADI), which falls under the remit of the Justice Ministry.

"What they are doing with all these measures is dismantling a public policy, and also trying to undermine the foundations of democracy, because here there was state terrorism condemned by the Supreme Court of Justice," said Gustavo Fernando Lopez former deputy of Buenos Aires

The protest came after the draft of a government decree announcing the decision was leaked.

The organisation has been searching for 46 years, 137 grandchildren have been recovered and 300 are still missing.

The State Workers Association (ATE) reports that President Milei's workforce reduction cuts policies resulted in approximately 27,500 job losses between December and June.
