Description

Three-year-old pandas Bao Li and Qing Bao arrived at Dulles International Airport on Tuesday, travelling from Chengdu, China, to make the Smithsonian National Zoo their new habitat under US-China 'Panda Diplomacy.'

The footage shows bears disembarking from a FedEx plane at Dulles International Airport. A forklift carefully carries them to transport crates, and FedEx vehicles can also be seen entering and offloading the crates with bears at the zoo. Later, the pandas munched on bamboo trees, adapting to their new enclosure.

According to reports, the zoo's Panda exhibit had been empty for a little less than a year since the three pandas were returned to China last November.

New pandas come to the Smithsonian National Zoo under a 10-year breeding and research agreement. The animals will be in quarantine for at least 30 days to help them adjust to their new home.

The National Zoo received pandas from China back in 1972 right after President Richard Nixon's trip to the country opened diplomatic and trade relations. China has used pandas as 'envoys of friendship' with the US in the past, according to the Congressional Research Service.

The pandas will make a public debut in late January, according to Smithsonian's National Zoo.
