٠٠:٠٢:٥٠Thousands of Muslims gathered along a street-long table in the Matariya neighbourhood of Cairo to break their fasting at the traditional mass Iftar event on Monday, the 15th day of the Holy month of Ramadan.
Footage shows a crowd gathering on a street adorned with lights and lanterns. They are seated around long tables, enjoying their meals during the fasting period. Some of the attendees are holding Palestinian flags and can be heard chanting in support of the Palestinian people amidst the ongoing conflict with Israel.
Muslims gathered at the event expressed their inspiration for the traditions which has been taking place for ten years. One of the locals, Sayed Ahmed, called this day 'historic and global.'
"Ten full years, and God willing, we will not stop this habit, and we will always remain with each other, one heart and one man, a Muslim and a Christian together, and the Christian before the Muslim, and we are all at each other’s backs," he added.
Matariya mass Iftar is a traditional event celebrated on the 15th day of the month of Ramadan in the Matariya neighbourhood for ten years. According to local media reports, this is the biggest Iftar event involving about 10,000 people this year.
"Today is a great, great joy. This year is different from the past nine years. We started with only 200 meals, then 2,000 meals, then 5,000, 6,000 meals, and today 15,000 meals," said another resident Sherif Mohamed.
At the call of Maghrib prayer, which announces the time for Muslims to break their fast, large tables containing a variety of foods are usually made available for anyone to partake in at no cost.
