Description

Several activists were detained by the New York Police Department (NYPD) in New York City on Friday, as police continued to clear the encampments made by students across educational campuses in the city.

Footage shows the NYPD officers detaining at least one protester and escorting her to the police truck, while other protesters marched from the New York University (NYU) to The New School campus.

Protesters could be seen holding Palestinian flags and placards reading 'Same struggle same fight! Gaza & The Bronx united!', 'End US-backed genocide, our tax dollars fund murder', and 'Education not Occupation' among others.

"[They] have deliberately targeted Palestinian students and our allies, militarising our campuses, and allowing the NYPD to control our movement", stated Nadia, a protester.

According to local reports, 56 individuals were detained by the city's police department following the clearance of these encampments, among them were 43 people from The New School and 13 from New York University.

On Wednesday, police wiped protests at Columbia and the City College of New York as city Mayor Eric Adams reported that 300 arrests were made.

On Thursday, the NYPD released some of the detainees at Columbia and the City College of New York (CCNY) since Tuesday, where almost 60 percent of the detainees were not students, out of almost 300 individuals taken into custody.

The campus protests, which have spread to other universities across the country are calling for the institutions to cut ties with Israel.

US President Joe Biden also addressed the camps, claiming that he supported 'peaceful protest' but 'violent protest is not protected', adding that "vandalism, trespassing, breaking windows, shutting down campuses, forcing the cancellation of classes and graduations, none of this is a peaceful protest."
