Description

In a coordinated demonstration dubbed "Flood Manhattan for July 4th," hundreds of pro-Palestine protesters took to the streets of New York City on Independence Day to voice their opposition to the US government's financial and military backing of Israel.

Protesters were seen marching on bustling streets and later gathering at the 14th Street–Union Square station to listen to speeches. They were waving flags and carrying placards with messages such as "Jews say! Stop arming Israel," "End all US aid to Israel," and "Lift the siege on Gaza Now!"

"On the 4th of July, we must be clear today is not a celebration of freedom. Today is a celebration of the legacy of genocide. This country was built on the genocide of indigenous people. On the mass slavery on the backs of African people, and today it continues to arm fund and carry on genocide." said Makeba, a protester, while addressing protesters.

"They believe we are tired and will give up they think we will turn our backs on the people in Gaza, never!" said Nadia, another demonstrator.

The demonstration was organized by the Code Pink group, which highlighted in their social media promotion that the protests were not solely focused on Israel but also critiqued the actions of the US government. Reports indicated that the protest aimed to raise awareness about the ongoing conflicts and the need for change in US foreign policy.

It was later reported that American flags were burned by protesters during the event.

Pro-Palestine protests have been ongoing for nine months after Israel's operations in Gaza following Hamas's unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas. Palestinian officials reported that at least 37,900 people had been killed and more than 87,060 injured at the time of publication.

The IDF claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure were targeted in the response. However, United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
