Description

Dozens of displaced Palestinians gathered at the Al-Huda Mosque in Gaza's southern city of Rafah for Taraweeh prayers on Saturday ahead of Ramadan.

Footage features worshippers, including children, praying inside and outside the mosque next to the rubble during the event to mark the beginning of the holy month.

"I can compare the previous holy month of Ramadan and the current Ramadan, previous Ramadan came with delight, joy, and love. The current Ramadan is very sad, children have no chance to be happy, and elders are tired and sad for martyrs. We ask God's mercy for martyrs, we try to bring joy to our children despite the sadness inside us," Nabil Abu Ghali said.

Another mentioned that the conditions are 'very hard.' "It's supposed to be modest during prayers. We ask God to remove this crisis and get back to Taraweeh and night prayer in better conditions," the man added.

Ramadan began at sundown on Sunday, as believers prepared for the month-long dawn-to-dusk fast which aims to bring them closer to God.

The Al-Huda Mosque was reportedly shelled by Israeli warplanes in February. According to the Hamas Government Information Office in Gaza, Israeli forces have targeted 500 mosques across the Gaza Strip since the onset of the war on October 7, with 220 mosques destroyed and 290 mosques partially damaged.

The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) has claimed that Hamas locations and infrastructure are targeted in the ongoing operation in the Strip. Strikes on Al-Huda took place amid an operation to free two Israeli-Argentine hostages from Rafah, while the IDF said 'terror targets' had been hit.

Fighting continues in Gaza for a sixth month after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on southern Israel on October 7, killing 1,139 people, mostly civilians, and kidnapping over 200, according to Israeli officials.

Israel declared war on the group and a 'complete siege' of Gaza, with a large-scale campaign of air strikes. A ground incursion began at the end of the third week, with Israeli leaders vowing to 'wipe out' Hamas.

Palestinian officials reported that more than 31,000 people had been killed at the time of publication. United Nations experts warned against 'collective punishment' for the people of Gaza, before predicting a 'humanitarian crisis' and then claimed that 'hell is settling in' for the region.
