Uncle of US-Turkish activist Aysenur Ezgi Eygi, Ali Tikkin, claimed President Joe Biden 'should've been more courageous' in calling out her killing, speaking during a period of mourning at the family home in Didim, Turkey.

The Israeli military has admitted it was 'highly likely' she had been 'hit indirectly and unintentionally' during a protest in Beita on Friday.

"American support for Israel is well known," Tikkin said. "We don't think the US response has been sufficient. At the very least, Biden should have been more courageous, like the secretary of state [Antony Blinken] was."

Blinken described it as 'unprovoked and unjustified', while Biden said it was 'totally unacceptable' - although the family claimed the president had not spoken with them.

Footage also shows other relatives and friends, and the governor of the area, gathering together to mourn Eygi's death.

"We would have appreciated it if the US had taken a stand and defended the rights of its citizen on the other side of the world," her uncle continued. "There may be more incidents in the future. The US also needs to protect the rights of its citizens."

Tikkin said he discovered Aysenur had been killed via her brother.

"He checked on international news agencies at around three in the morning. First, he informed his parents and his family, and then when the news was confirmed, they informed us. That's how we found out," he said.

However, he added that he couldn't 'hold the US responsible' for her death.

"She was a free individual. She went there of her own volition and free will. In fact, we didn't even know that she had gone there. She had told us she was going to Jordan," he said. "She crossed into Israel last Tuesday and then travelled to that area 3-4 days later."

The 26 year old journalist killed while participating in a weekly protest against the expansion of settlements in the West Bank. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned Ezgi's killing and described the incident as "a barbaric Israeli intervention against a peaceful protest."

Tensions in the West Bank have been heightened since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023, with more than 690 Palestinians killed by Israeli fire, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health. In the same period, at least 23 Israelis were killed in attacks carried out by Palestinians in the West Bank, according to official Israeli figures.
