Description

Thousands of Sufi Muslims joined a march in celebration of Mawlid al-Nabawi - the birth of the Prophet Muhammed - in Cairo on Sunday.

Footage shows believers forming Mawakibs - or processions - while drumming and singing religious songs, with men, women, older people and children all taking part.

The procession started from Old Cairo's Salah al-Jaafari Mosque, continuing to the Sayyidna Al-Hussein Mosque.

Following the procession, the General Sheikhdom of Sufi Orders organised a celebration at the Sayyidna Al-Hussein Mosque, attended by a group of prominent religious leaders.

Sufism is a part of Islam which focuses on purification and spirituality, with Egypt home to around 15 million Sufi Muslims.

Muslims around the world observe the birth of Prophet Muhammed on the 12th of Rabi' al-Awwal, the third month in the year 1446 of the Islamic calendar.
