At least 18 passengers were reportedly killed following a minibus falling into the Nile River in Menoufia Governorate northwest of Cairo on Tuesday.
Footage shows rescuers sailing on ferries on the site of the incident, a crane working at the harbour, and locals watching the operation from both sides of the river.
According to local media reports, the minibus fell off the Abu Ghaleb crossing, claiming the lives of 18 out of the 26 passengers—girls aged 16 and younger and a 40-year-old woman working at Ashmoun Centre in Menoufia Governorate, north of Cairo.
Preliminary investigations say that the bus driver got into a verbal disagreement with a person on the ferry and left the vehicle without putting the brakes on, which caused it to tumble into the Nile. He was reportedly arrested after trying to flee from the site.
A technical committee recovered the vehicle to ascertain the reasons for the accident, as river rescuers continued to work on the site looking for the bodies of the victims.
