New Yorkers gathered in the streets to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks, on Saturday evening, as the now customary two beams of light shot out over New York City's skyline where the World Trade Center's Twin Towers stood.
"It's 20 years later, when the world was changed, New York, the greatest city in the world was attacked. Life as we knew was changed, our innocence was taken from us. Now here, 20 years later, we need to remember exactly what happened," said a local close to the memorial centre in New York City.
First presented six months after the attacks and every year there after, the beams pay tribute to those killed in the attacks.
The 9/11 terrorist attacks killed 2,977 people and injured thousands at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and in Somerset County, Pennsylvania.
