US President Joe Biden reaffirmed his commitment to Israel's security during a press conference held alongside President of the Republic of Korea Moon Jae-in, in Washington DC on Friday.

"There is no shift in my commitment, commitment to the security of Israel, period. No shift, not at all, but I'll tell you what there is a shift in. The shift is that we still need a two-state solution. It is the only answer," Biden stressed.

Biden said that after speaking with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the US is going to make sure that security is provided in the West Bank region. "We renewed the security commitment as well as economic commitment to the people on the West Bank," Biden added.

"I also indicated to the Israelis that I thought it was very important that they stop, in Jerusalem, this inter-communal fighting by extremes on both sides. It has to end," the US President stressed.

"Until the region says unequivocally that they acknowledge the right of Israel to exist as an independent Jewish state, there will be no peace," Biden concluded.

The conflict led to over 240 fatalities on the Palestinian side and 12 on the Israeli side, according to the respective authorities.

The ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian groups came into force on Friday (23:00 GMT, Thursday).
