The US Congress sought to 'vote on a resolution to establish a task force' on the failed assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump, stressing 'full transparency and accountability', as the House Committee on Homeland Security held a hearing in Washington DC on Tuesday.

'What we saw after those shots rang out should also encourage everyone," noted Mark Green, Chairman of the Committee on Homeland Security, in his opening remarks on incident, where he praised Trump's reaction right after the attack, as well as the efforts made by the Secret Service agents to deal with the shooter.

He went on saying that "a massive security failure by the Secret Service and the Department of Homeland Security" took place while comparing the incident with the assassination attempt of Ronald Reagan in 1981.

"We must be committed in our determination to ensure that this never happens again. That is why the House Committee on Homeland Security is demanding full transparency and accountability," he concluded.

Bennie Thompson, Congressman representing Mississippi's Second District, in his turned also stressed that the 'security failures' must be 'identified and addressed to ensure that they never ever happen again.'

"The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Pennsylvania State Police have active and ongoing criminal investigations. The Secret Service has begun an internal investigation. Secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas has announced the bipartisan independent law enforcement review," he said.

The congressman also added that Congress 'will vote on a resolution to establish a task force' on the July 13 shooting.

In an official statement on Tuesday, House Speaker Mike Johnson and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries confirmed that a bipartisan task force, comprising of seven Republicans and six Democrats, will be formed to investigate the shooting as well as to make recommendations for reforms to relevant government agencies.

"The task force will be empowered with subpoena authority and will move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and make certain such failures never happen again," the statement read.

During the rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, Trump was seen with blood on his face after a bullet grazed his ear. He raised his fist to the crowd and shouted 'fight' as the Secret Service moved him to the motorcade. Two individuals were reported dead, including a spectator and 20-year-old gunman Thomas Crooks, who was shot dead by Secret Service agents at the scene.

Reports indicate that he was a registered Republican but had also donated $15 to a Democrat-aligned political action committee on the day Joe Biden began his presidency.
