Hundreds of pro-Palestine students gathered in front of the EU parliament in Brussels' Place du Luxembourg on Thursday to demonstrate against Israel's participation in the 'European Horizon Project' - the bloc's scientific research initiative.
Protesters could be seen holding Palestinian flags while chanting slogans and holding banners calling for the EU to cut ties with Israel.
"We are here today with students and other staff members of universities and also people who are supporting us with the message that our universities, our supporting universities in Israel who are supporting the genocide and the apartheid regime in Gaza," a protester said.
The protest comes as several European universities suspended agreements with Israeli universities unilaterally, amid demands to halt EU-funded research collaborations with Israeli universities.
Earlier, EU research and innovation commissioner Iliana Ivanova warned universities and researchers against terminating Horizon Europe projects with Israeli counterparts based solely on their nationality, as it would be considered as 'discrimination'.
