Description

Hundreds celebrated the Feast of the Assumption joining festivities during the 47th edition of the annual Marmarita carnival in Syria's Homs on Wednesday.

Footage shows costumed participants parading and posing for photos while attendees are dancing and enjoying scout orchestra performing.

"The vibes are awesome! We feel that western and eastern vibes are intermingled which provide you with great energy. There is a good energy in the atmosphere. This sort of carnivals or celebration should be held daily and annually in Syria," shared a participant.

The Feast of the Assumption, also known as the Dormition of the Mother of God, commemorates the Virgin Mary's bodily ascent to heaven. It is observed by the Oriental Orthodox and Eastern Catholic Churches on August 15 according to Julian calendar and August 28 according to Gregorian calendar.

Marmarita name is derived from the Syriac word related to a small temple in the town of a saint called 'Marta', which was later called 'Mar Marta', meaning temple of saint Marta, afterwards the name developed until it eventually became Marmarita, the current name of the town.
