Description

Former police officer Derek Chauvin pleaded guilty in a federal court in St Paul, Minnesota, on Wednesday, for violating the civil rights of George Floyd in the arrest that resulted in Floyd's death in 2020.

Chauvin, who is currently serving a sentence of more than 22 years for murdering the 46-year-old Black man, admitted for the first time having used unreasonable force, kneeling on George Floyd’s neck even after he became unresponsive.

"This is plea today is historic," said attorney Jeff Storms.

After the agreement, Chauvin will not face trial in January - which could spare him from life imprisonment.

Chauvin also admitted in court the assault attempt against a minor boy in 2017.

On May 25, 2020, George Floyd died after then Minneapolis police officer Chauvin pinned him to the ground with a knee on his neck for more than nine minutes. The killing, which was filmed by bystanders, sparked protests on racial justice and discriminatory policing across the US and around the world.
