Description

The aftermath of a blast at the newly reopened maternity hospital in Omdurman was seen in footage taken on Saturday. The attack took place on Friday, just a day after restoration work had been completed, according to Sudan’s Health Ministry.

Footage shows heavy damage to the exterior of the building, destroyed walls and roofing, broken windows and debris inside.

The department blamed the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) for allegedly shelling the facility. The area was previously controlled by the RSF but retaken by the Sudanese army in recent months.

The RSF had not commented at time of publication. According to the authorities, there were no casualties.

At least 15,000 people have reportedly been killed in Sudan since the fighting between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the RSF erupted last April, according to the United Nations.

A military council ran the country since the coup in 2021, although tensions emerged between leaders over the country's direction, the integration of the RSF into the army, and the planned transition to civilian rule.
