US President Joe Biden made a number of unfortunate slips while speaking about the shooting for his Republican opponent Donald Trump, during an address from the White House in Washington DC on Sunday.

Footage shows Biden apparently reading from an autocue, but referring to his rival as 'former Trump', adding that he was not seriously 'linjured' and saying that in the US, differences were resolved at the 'battle (ballot) box'.

Biden also admitted that the Republican National Convention - where Donald Trump is set to be confirmed his party's candidate - would 'criticise my record'.

"I'll continue to speak out strongly for our democracy, stand up for our Constitution, the rule of law, call for action at the ballot box. No violence on our streets. That's how democracy should work," he added, while also paying tribute to the spectator who had been killed in the shooting.

"There is no place in America for this kind of violence or for any violence ever. Period. No exceptions. We can’t allow this violence to be normalised," he underlined.

Trump escaped with minor injuries after shots were fired during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on Saturday. The former president was seen with blood on his face after a bullet grazed his ear, as well as raising his fist to the crowd and shouting 'fight' as the secret service moved him to the motorcade.

The gunman, named 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by secret service agents at the scene. It was reported that he was a registered Republican, but had also donated $15 to a Democrat-aligned political action committee the day Joe Biden began his presidency. His motive remains unknown.

One spectator, 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief, was also killed in the shooting and two others were wounded.

Biden's cognitive abilities have seen huge media scrutiny, which intensified following a much-criticised debate performance with Donald Trump. Most recently, he referred to Ukraine's leader Volodymyr Zelensky as 'President Putin' and his VP as 'Trump' rather than Kamala Harris, during the NATO Summit in Washington DC. Earlier, the White House denied he was being treated for Parkinson's, after reports claimed his doctor had met with a specialist.
