Locals in Las Vegas suggested that the shooting of Donald Trump at a rally could boost his chances of re-election, speaking in the key battleground state of Nevada on Sunday.

"My opinion on Trump's assassination attempt is really, I think it's an infringement on our democracy," said one. ""My main choice is Donald Trump, because I'm pretty confident that we need a strong leader."

Another believed that the incident "increases Trump's chances for getting elected."

"It's probably people leaning on the fence are gonna lean a little bit more towards him, maybe some sympathy. You know, Nevada's becoming more of a red state now," he continued.

"Trump is still the better candidate because he's more coherent than Biden," said a third, adding that he was the 'lesser of two evils'. She even alleged the shooting was 'too convenient' and even 'staged'. Similar claims have emerged online since the incident, although there has been no reported evidence to back them up.

Trump has held a consistent lead in the polls over incumbent Joe Biden in Nevada, and is currently around 4-5 points ahead.

On Saturday, shots were fired at Trump during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The former president was seen with blood on his face after a bullet grazed his ear, as well as raising his fist to the crowd and shouting 'fight' as the secret service moved him to the motorcade.

The gunman, named 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks, was shot dead by secret service agents at the scene. It was reported that he was a registered Republican, but had also donated $15 to a Democrat-aligned political action committee the day Joe Biden began his presidency.

One spectator, 50-year-old Corey Comperatore, a former fire chief was also killed in the shooting and two others were wounded.
