Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said that an Iranian response to Israel's attack was 'certain', during a press conference in Tehran on Sunday.
"The Islamic Republic of Iran in the inherent framework of having the right to legitimate defence under article 51 of the United Nations Charter considers itself entitled to the defence," Qalibaf stated.
"We [Iran] warn the United States, which is the main supporter and partner in all the crimes and war crimes of the Zionist regime, to stop the killing of innocent people in Gaza and Lebanon by Israel and to prevent the spread of instability and insecurity in the entire region."
Qalibaf went on to call on the US, which he called Israel's 'main supporter', to prevent the conflicts in Gaza and Lebanon from spreading 'in the entire region'.
In a statement, the Iranian Foreign Ministry has denounced the Israeli attacks, calling it a violation of International law and Iran's sovereignty.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called the 'precise' and 'powerful' strikes a success claiming that all objectives had been achieved.
“We have severely struck [Iran’s] defence capabilities and its ability to produce missiles,” Netanyahu claimed on Sunday.
Israel announced attacks on Iranian 'military targets' in the early hours of Saturday morning local time. A number of explosions were reported in Tehran by local media.
IDF spokesperson Daniel Hagari said it was "in response to months of continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against the state of Israel."
Four soldiers were killed in the Israeli attack according to media reports. Several countries in the Middle East and around the world condemned the Israeli attack, including the UAE, Egypt, Jordan, Kuwait, Turkey, Indonesia, among others. The US and the UK urged Iran to exercise restraint and underscored Israel's right to self-defence, while European countries such as Germany and France called for de-escalation.
Iran launched a wave of missile strikes on Israel on October 1, which it said was in response to Israel's killing of Hezbollah Secretary General Hassan Nasrallah and others. PM Benjamin Netanyahu said that Tehran had made a 'big mistake' and warned of 'consequences'.
Israel is currently fighting Hezbollah with airstrikes and ground troops in southern Lebanon and conducting an ongoing offensive against Hamas in Gaza. The Gaza conflict followed the October 7, 2023 attacks which killed 1,139 people according to the Israeli side. Over 2,600 have been reported killed in Lebanon and over 42,000 in Gaza at time of publication, according to figures released by the Lebanese and Palestinian side
