Uruguay's presidential candidate for the centre-left 'Frente Amplio' party, Yamandu Orsi, rallied with his supporters in Canelones on Sunday night after early exit polls suggested that he is ahead of his conservative rival, Alvaro Delgado.
Footage shows party's supporters gathering at Plaza Felipe V to celebrate the outcome while Orsi is seen addressed the crowd.
"It is a moment of deep joy and it is also a time of change, a time of hope. Today the Uruguayan people won, today hope is triumphing and you are here to prove it," Orsi told the crowds.
"With job, with justice, with equality, with security and with freedom. So be it, we're almost there, let's redouble, redouble and generate that country of unity that we want so much. Because we are many parts and a whole at the same time. See you, we're almost there, we will triumph," Orsi emphasised.
One of the party's supporters Silvia Bordoni described the outcome of Sunday vote as an 'immense joy' referring to the country's legacy.
"We fought, we fought and we continue fighting, and well, we must continue," she stated.
According to media reports, the polls showed that Orsi secured 44 per cent of the vote followed by 27 per cent for Delgado while the young conservative Andres Ojeda secured 16 per cent.
In the South American country, a second round of elections is announced when no candidate wins with a majority of over 50 per cent of the votes. This means the candidates will face off on November 24 for the next round.
