UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said the Syrian conflict, ten years on, is a 'living nightmare,' in a statement he gave from the UN headquarters in New York City on Wednesday.

"Ten years ago, the violent suppression of peaceful popular demonstrations in Syria set the country on the path to a horrific war. After a decade of conflict, in the middle of a global pandemic, and faced with a steady stream of new crises, Syria has fallen off the front page, and yet the situation remains a living nightmare," he stated.

"It is impossible to fully fathom the extent of the devastation in Syria, but its people have endured some of the greatest crimes the world has witnessed this century," he continued.

Guterres also said that the length of the Syrian conflict shows a lack of effectiveness in the international security governance system.

"This is something that should be a source of reflection about everybody involved," he concluded.
