Description

Members of the Iranian community rallied in Washington DC on Friday to protest the Iranian presidential elections taking place in their homeland.

The group said that they do not recognise the elections as they do not want to 'give legitimacy' to the state.

Protesters were seen stomping on pictures of Iranian officials. They also booed and shouted 'shame on you' at voters entering the polling station located at the Interest Section of the Islamic Republic of Iran at the Embassy of Pakistan.

"We are gathered here in solidarity with Iranians inside the country to send a message to the people in the United States who are Iranians who are coming to vote here and we are telling them that basically they are traitors to their country when they dip their hands in ink to vote what they are really doing is dipping their hands and fingers in blood of the Iranian people," said Cameron Khansarinia, policy director at the National Union for Democracy in Iran.

Iran's presidential election took place on 18 June, with votes currently being counted.

Presidential candidates include Expediency Discernment Council Secretary Mohsen Rezaei Mirqaed, Judiciary Chief Ebrahim Raisi, parliamentarian Amir-Hossein Ghazizadeh, and former Central Bank of Iran governor Abdolnaser Hemmati.

Opinion polls have suggested that Raisi, a close ally of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, is the favourite to win.

The 13th presidential election is held simultaneously with the sixth round of city and village councils' elections, the first mid-term for the 11th parliament's by-election, and the second mid-term for the fifth Assembly of Experts election.
