Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson claimed that in the modern world "you can take a dead person and make them president" - in an apparent jibe at Joe Biden - as he addressed the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee on Thursday.

It is also true as a fact that you could take, I don't know, a mannequin, a dead person, and make him president. If you - no, you could. You could. I'm just saying, theoretically possible. With enough - with enough cheating, that could happen," he claimed.

Carlson added that he had spoken with Trump the night he was shot on Saturday and said the former president had told him he was 'amazed' and 'proud' that the crowd didn't run'.

"He turned down the most obvious opportunity in politics to inflame the nation after being shot. To inflame the nation, which is an opportunity that almost every other politician I've ever met and certainly his opponents would have taken instantly," Carlson added.

Meanwhile Trump's former secretary of state Mike Pompeo claimed that under his government, Russia was 'at bay' along with China, the DPRK and Iran.Trump's son Eric said his father was "a man who has defied all odds more than once."

"A man who survived a bullet that was intended to eliminate him permanently from our future and from our family. Never have I been more proud to be a Trump," he added.

They were all speaking ahead of Donald Trump own address to the convention, marking his first public speech since Saturday's assassination attempt in Pennsylvania. Trump's appearance concludes the four-day event, while the Democratic convention is scheduled for next month.
