Description

The first pictures from the site of the helicopter crash which killed Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others, were seen from East Azerbaijan province on Monday.

The helicopter came down in the mountains in northern Iran during heavy fog on Sunday, with the site discovered by rescue teams in the early hours of Monday. Raisi was returning from the inauguration of a dam on the border with Azerbaijan. No official cause has been reported at time of publication.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Condolences came from the leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and others. Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to Supreme Leader, was elected in 2021.
