Description

Tens of thousands of people gathered at the University of Tehran, as Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei led prayers during the funeral ceremony for the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and other top officials on Wednesday.

Footage shows a number of Iranian officials and military leaders, those from the Hamas leadership and many other mourners, with some seen trying to touch the coffins as they were driven past.

The 63-year-old president, his Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and others were all confirmed killed when their helicopter came down in the mountains in northern Iran’s East Azerbaijan province during heavy fog on Sunday.

The Supreme Leader declared five days of national mourning. First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will take over as acting president for an interim period, with elections scheduled after 50 days. Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani becomes acting foreign minister.

Condolences came from the leaders of Russia, India, Pakistan, Iraq, Syria, Egypt and others. Raisi, a conservative cleric seen as close to Ayatollah Khamenei, was elected in 2021.
