Description

Dozens of couples took to the dance floor for the Tango World Championship in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.

Footage features dancers dressed up in traditional costumes, performing the energetic 'dance of love' on the stage and assembling for the awards ceremony.

In the 'stage tango' category, Ayelen Morando and Sebastian Martine took first prize - and were overcome with emotions at the win.

"I'm very happy, very happy. It is years of hard work, of dreaming and not giving up. We are very happy, it is something that we always dreamed of. And our families and our teachers supported us, this is for them too. This is our whole dream," shared Ayelen.

"Many emotions together, many years of sacrifice, fighting for what one loves and showing what we know how to do. And we are very happy that they (judges) knew how to appreciate what we tried to convey," added Sebastian.

The 'salon tango' category was won by Fatima Caracoch and Lucas Brenno Marquez.

"[The tango] is something that we love, it is something of our culture, we want to transmit it to as many people as possible, so having this open door is an honour and a huge privilege," said Fatima. Lucas added: "the truth is that tango for me is the family, it is the place, the culture and what brought me from Brazil to here and I continue to carry it now in life."

Dancers from 53 countries took part in the competition including couples from Kazakhstan, Latvia, Moldova and Myanmar.

The event, organised by the Argentinian Ministry of Culture, is part of the Tango Buenos Aires festival, held on August 14-27 and involving over 2,000 dancers and musicians.

The dance itself dates back to the 1880s, when it emerged in the Rio de la Plata, the border between Argentina and Uruguay.
