Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov reiterated that his country backed Sudan's Sovereign Council led by Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, amid the ongoing civil war, as he held a meeting with Sudanese Minister of Minerals Mohammed Basheer Abunommo in Port Sudan on Sunday.

"Regarding legitimacy, we co-operate with the leadership in Port Sudan, as the Sovereign Council represents the Sudanese people and the Republic of Sudan," he said. "Sudan is a participant in the Arab League, the African Union, and the United Nations. We have an embassy and an accredited ambassador to this government and leadership, and likewise, the Sudanese ambassador is present in Moscow and working actively."

Bogdanov also spoke of potential collaboration between their two countries.

"We have rich experience in the field of minerals, and we are very grateful for this discussion, this meeting, and the in-depth conversation regarding co-operation between our countries, which is productive and mutually beneficial. We have companies operating in Sudanese territories for decades," Bogdanov said. "Today, we also discussed promising projects and co-operation in these fields, within a broader framework, as we have a joint government committee for trade and economic co-operation."

For his part, Abunommo highlighted the ongoing efforts to work together.

"We also discussed issues of joint co-operation with the aim of overcoming any obstacles facing the implementation of projects in the agreed-upon co-operation, which were included in the implementation matrix at the seventh session held in Moscow in August 2022," he said.

According to the Sudanese News Agency 'SUNA,' Sudan and Russia have established extensive co-operation in multiple sectors, including industry, finance, banking, geology, mining, environment, energy, higher education, scientific research, and agriculture.

Port Sudan has served as the temporary headquarters of the Burhan's Sudanese government since April 2023.

Fighting continues between Sudan's armed forces and militants of the Rapid Support Forces. The conflict, which began in April 2023, has caused severe disruption to imports from neighbouring countries and supply chains, while many domestic factories have been destroyed.

Up to 15,000 people have been killed according to UN sources, with over eight million displaced.
