Description

Damascus residents shared their thoughts on the outcome of the US presidential election and its possible impact on the situation in Syria on Monday.

Some of them said the change in the White House was unlikely to affect the country.

“Whether Biden is successful or Trump is deposed, the situation is the same. It will not make a difference because America's policies will be the same regardless if the president is a Democrat or Republican. Both of them have the same policies. Both parties' policies will only differ domestically, but their foreign policies are exactly the same,” said lawyer Hassan Mekdad.

"I am very certain that America's politics will not change with changing officials. There are agendas that are prepared ahead of time and given to the US president before he even gets to the White House. See, every former US president, from George H.W. Bush to Trump to Biden, took his own political path in this regard,” said Mahmoud, a Damascus resident.

However, some were positive about the results. "I am in general optimistic and do not think that they are necessarily against us. I heard a video today that he [Biden] might support Islam in some way and not attack us like the others. That is all," said one Damascus resident.

President-Elect Joe Biden declared himself the winner of the US presidential election over the weekend. The incumbent President Donald Trump has yet to concede defeat.
